Vitamins, taken regularly and in sufficient quantities, in daily food or as supplements have been proven to help maintain health. The last few years have brought increasing evidence that Vitamins also have skin-care applications. These Vitamins, or Anti-Oxidants, are Vitamins C and E.
Vitamins have been proven to help prevent or delay the degenerative damage associated with the aging process. The skin is composed of three major layers. The base layer is where skin cells originate, and with time, they rise to the surface, going through gradual modifications. Although the cell movement is constant, this cycle takes about 2 weeks in young people and more than 30 days in people over 50.
The cells in our bodies are continuously exposed to free radicals (which are produced through natural bodily processes and external sources such as pollution) which cause the effects we see as aging. Vitamins C and E are very potent weapons against free-radicals.
It has also been well established that Vitamin C plays a crucial role in the body's manufacture of collagen, which is responsible for the skin's elasticity. Applying Vitamin C directly to the surface of the skin does stimulate collagen synthesis which improves skin elasticity, helps reverse the natural skin thinning that occurs with aging and provides long term protection against sun damage. Vitamin C has been scientifically proven to help refine lines, improve wrinkles, condition the skin and prevent premature aging.
Vitamin E, another important Anti-Oxidant, actually helps slow/reverse the aging process. Vitamin E prevents the formation of free radicals which can be very damaging to the skin. It also is a terrific moisturizer and provides extensive protection from photosensitivity and repair of UV damage.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C is well known for its toning and firming effects. Vitamin C contributes to the formation of collagen, improves the repair and regeneration process of aging skin and is a powerful antioxidant--helping the skin defend itself from the sun, pollution and tobacco. There is scientific proof that it helps improve aged skin and helps maintain skin health and tone.
Additional benefits are that it helps prevent the formation of free radicals, has the capacity to repair damage caused by UVA rays and reduce the redness cause by UVB rays. Also, when applied regularly the skin can get lighter, reducing the appearance of sun spots.
Vitamin C is also found in citrus fruits (oranges, lemons, grapefruits), parsley and kiwis.
Vitamin E
Vitamin E is known for its protective qualities. It is a well known antioxidant and helps prevent the formation of free radicals. It also speeds up the healing process. Vitamin E protects the regenerating skin layers which results in a slow-down of the aging process. It is also remarkably moisturizing and helps protect against photosensitivity as well as healing UV skin damage.
In addition, Vitamin E has anti-inflammatory, hypoallergenic characteristics that make it useful to all skin types.
Vitamin E is also found in vegetable oil (particularly wheat germ and sunflower), hazelnuts, almonds, nuts, pistachios and peanuts.
